Disclaimer:
Dissociative Identity Disorder (previously referred to as Multiple Personality Disorder) is a serious thing. And while the notion of there being split personalities, it differs with it’s often-partnered illness Schizophrenia in many ways. Firstly, DID is about multiple personalities with a person’s mind, often derived from situations where one (or more) aspects of a person’s mind cannot deal with a particular stress or trauma and instead hide, forcing other aspects to deal with it instead; or in some cases creating aspects to deal with the issues.
Schizophrenia on the other hand deals less with multiple personalities and more with hallucinations and sensations that aren’t real. The best way I can describe it is DID is when you hear voices and you know they’re your own, while Schizophrenics hear voices that are someone else. What those voices say is somewhat irrelevant to which illness they have, as there are Schizophrenics who hear voices but are not pressured into violent or destructive acts (like they are most commonly associated with) and there are those suffering from DID that are incredibly aggressive. And knowing the voices are yours or not is complex in its own right, but the above comparison will do for a basic understanding.
While this work is fictional, it is based on a good friend of mine. My best friend, really. She has struggled with DID for near a decade now, and I have been with her through that. She’s a gamer through and through, and usually a cheerful - albeit quiet - person. However there have been times I have walked in to see her holding a knife to her own throat, or walking off down a road to nowhere to abandon everything behind her. Some of her aspects are younger, some older. Some aggressive, and some protectful. And while getting the aspects to merge together is the main goal of therapy, there are still some memories left unaccounted for, which means some other aspects may still be hiding.
Because these stories use people I know as a basis for the characters, I've decided to keep this separate from the rest of my works; so those who know my works and these people can't piece things together as easily. So they will not be available within my website's menu.
